Student Opportunities: Gain Real-World Experience

Don’t Just Learn. Do.

At the APSU GIS Center, we bridge the gap between the classroom and the professional world. Working with us means you’ll be applying your skills to solve real problems for local governments and community organizations. You’ll build a resume of tangible accomplishments, master industry-standard technology, and develop a professional network—all while gaining experience, getting paid, or earning course credit.

This premier program places you directly with a local government partner for a semester. You’ll tackle a specific challenge for them, like digitizing utility maps or verifying asset inventories, providing immense value to the community while building your professional credentials.

Take on a high-level consulting role. Lead a “GIS Needs Assessment” for a municipal partner, where you’ll interview department heads, analyze workflows, and deliver a strategic roadmap for their GIS implementation—a perfect showcase of your analytical and project management skills.

Have a specific interest or need to fulfill an academic requirement? We offer flexible opportunities to contribute to community-focused projects, like our work mapping historic cemeteries or creating public information StoryMaps.
